Overview

SQL Server 2014 Standard introduced In-Memory OLTP — memory-optimised tables and natively compiled stored procedures for high-contention transactional workloads — along with buffer pool extension to SSD, backup encryption and delayed durability. Its support lifecycle has ended: no security updates have been published since July 2024 without an Extended Security Update agreement. It remains a legitimate purchase where an application is certified against this version specifically, and the version constraint should be the reason for choosing it.

Features

  • In-Memory OLTP

Memory-optimised tables and natively compiled stored procedures for high-contention workloads.

  • Buffer pool extension

Extends the buffer pool onto SSD storage to enlarge the effective read cache.

  • Backup encryption

Backups encrypted at creation time with AES or Triple DES, in the Standard edition.

  • Delayed durability

Transaction commits acknowledged before the log flush completes, trading a durability window for throughput.

Frequently asked questions

Is SQL Server 2014 still supported?

No. Extended support ended on 9 July 2024. It receives no further security updates unless covered by an Extended Security Update agreement, so it should only be deployed where an application requires this specific version.

Why buy an out-of-support release?

Because certification is version-specific: an application vendor may only support its product on SQL Server 2014, and running it elsewhere voids that support. Where no such constraint exists, 2019 is the better purchase.

What is the difference between Standard and Enterprise?

Standard covers the database engine, Integration Services, Reporting Services and basic high availability. Enterprise removes the compute and memory ceilings and adds online index operations, table partitioning at scale, and advanced availability groups. Standard is capped at 128 GB of buffer pool memory per instance.

Do I need Client Access Licenses as well?

Under the Server + CAL model every user or device connecting to the server needs a CAL. CALs are not included with this key and are purchased separately.

Can I install it on more than one server?

No. One key activates one server. Additional servers need additional licenses.
