Overview

SQL Server 2019 Standard is Microsoft's relational database engine licensed for a single server. It is the release with the longest remaining support runway of the four sold here, with extended support through January 2030. Over 2017 it adds native UTF-8 collation support, Accelerated Database Recovery for near-instant rollback of long transactions, intelligent query processing, and PolyBase connectors that query external data sources as if they were local tables. The Standard edition includes the database engine, Integration Services, Reporting Services and basic availability groups.

Features

  • UTF-8 collation support

Native UTF-8 encoding for CHAR and VARCHAR columns, reducing storage for multilingual data.

  • Accelerated Database Recovery

Rollback and database recovery complete in near-constant time regardless of transaction size.

  • PolyBase data virtualisation

Queries Oracle, Teradata, MongoDB and ODBC sources without copying the data in first.

  • Intelligent query processing

Table variable deferred compilation and scalar UDF inlining improve plan quality without query changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is SQL Server 2019 still supported?

Yes. Mainstream support ended on 28 February 2025 and extended support, which continues to deliver security updates, runs until 8 January 2030.

Should I choose 2019 or 2017?

2019 for anything new — it is supported roughly two and a half years longer and adds UTF-8 collations and Accelerated Database Recovery. 2017 is the choice when an application is certified against it specifically.

What is the difference between Standard and Enterprise?

Standard covers the database engine, Integration Services, Reporting Services and basic high availability. Enterprise removes the compute and memory ceilings and adds online index operations, table partitioning at scale, and advanced availability groups. Standard is capped at 128 GB of buffer pool memory per instance.

Do I need Client Access Licenses as well?

Under the Server + CAL model every user or device connecting to the server needs a CAL. CALs are not included with this key and are purchased separately.

Can I install it on more than one server?

No. One key activates one server. Additional servers need additional licenses.
