Overview
Windows Server 2019 Datacenter carries the same per-core licensing and the same management surface as the Standard edition, and adds the features that make a host a virtualisation platform rather than a single server: unlimited Windows operating system environments on the licensed hardware, Storage Spaces Direct for hyper-converged storage, unrestricted Storage Replica, software-defined networking and shielded virtual machines. It is the edition to license where the machine's purpose is to run other machines.
Standard or Datacenter?
Both editions of this release install from the same media, carry the same system requirements and are licensed the same way. The difference is how many operating system environments the license grants — and, on the Datacenter side, the virtualisation features that come with it.
