Overview

Windows 10 Pro is the professional edition of the previous Windows desktop generation. It carries the same business features as its Windows 11 counterpart — BitLocker drive encryption, Active Directory and Azure AD domain join, Group Policy, Hyper-V and the ability to host incoming Remote Desktop connections — on hardware that predates the TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirements Windows 11 enforces. Microsoft ended support on 14 October 2025, so it is bought for machines that cannot be upgraded rather than for new builds.

Features

  • BitLocker device encryption

Full-disk encryption for internal and removable drives, managed centrally where required.

  • Domain join and Group Policy

Join Active Directory or Azure AD domains and receive centrally managed policy.

  • Hyper-V virtualisation

Run virtual machines natively without third-party software.

  • Remote Desktop host

Accept incoming Remote Desktop connections, which the Home edition cannot do.

  • Runs on pre-2017 hardware

No TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot requirement, so it installs where Windows 11 will not.

Frequently asked questions

Does Windows 10 still receive security updates?

No. Microsoft ended support on 14 October 2025. Outside a paid Extended Security Updates subscription no further patches are issued, so an internet-facing Windows 10 machine carries growing risk.

Why buy Windows 10 rather than Windows 11?

Because the hardware cannot run Windows 11. Windows 11 requires UEFI with Secure Boot and TPM 2.0, which most machines built before 2017 do not provide. Where the hardware does qualify, Windows 11 is the better purchase.

Can I upgrade a Windows 10 Pro license to Windows 11?

A qualifying Windows 10 device can upgrade to Windows 11 at no additional licensing cost, provided it meets the Windows 11 hardware requirements.
