Overview
Windows Server 2019 is the release many production estates settled on, and it remains a practical choice where an application vendor has certified 2019 but not a later version. It introduced Windows Admin Center as the browser-based management surface, System Insights for predictive analytics, and the Storage Migration Service for moving file servers with their settings and shares intact. Licensing follows the per-core model introduced with 2016, and the Standard edition grants two operating system environments per licensed server.
Standard or Datacenter?
Both editions of this release install from the same media, carry the same system requirements and are licensed the same way. The difference is how many operating system environments the license grants — and, on the Datacenter side, the virtualisation features that come with it.

Frequently asked questions
Should I choose 2019 or a later release?
Choose 2019 where an application vendor has certified it and not a later version. For a new build with no such constraint, a later release gives a longer remaining support lifecycle.
Is Windows Server 2019 still supported?
Mainstream support ended on 9 January 2024. It remains in extended support — security updates only, no new features — until 9 January 2029.
Do I need Client Access Licenses?
Yes. Client Access Licenses are required for users or devices accessing the server and are purchased separately from the server license.
